The birthplace of Vans is in sunny California, where Jim van Doorn and Paul van Doorn started 'The Van Doorn Rubber Company' in 1966. In the early 1970s, Vans sneakers were mostly used by the skate scene in California, mainly the Authentic and Era models. In 1977, in addition to the well-known 'Off the wall' logo, the Vans Sidestripe was designed and immediately became visible on the then new Vans Old Skool, Vans Sk8-Mid and Vans Sk8-Hi sneakers. Around the same time, another iconic Vans sneaker was also designed in collaboration with skaters and BMX'ers: Vans Classic Slip-On.
In all of Vans' campaigns, you will undoubtedly always find a link to creativity or sports. Of course, the brand has deep roots in skate culture, but these roots extend far beyond skate. For example, Vans also has a big hand in BMX, surf and snowboard culture. From all these sports, techniques are developed and stories emerge that benefit Vans. For example, famous stories from the BMX culture are the collaboration with SE Bikes and from the snowboard culture the collaboration with Arthur Longo. Besides these more performance-driven collaborations, Vans also has collaborations with famous TV shows like Vans x Spongebob, Vans x The Simpson or well-known personalities like Anderson Paak.
